  • Air Products is to invest US$500 million in a facility to produce 35 metric tonnes per day of liquefied green hydrogen per year near Massena in the far north of the state of New York.

The facility will be fed with 94 MWe from the St. Lawrence hydroelectric power plant, and will support the state’s goal of becoming a ‘Regional Clean Energy Hydrogen Hub’. While the main focus will be on using the liquid hydrogen for the mobility sector (Air Products itself has set a goal of converting its entire fleet of ~2000 trucks to run on hydrogen fuel cells), there will also be some delivery of the product to industrial users.

With the company having “determined that the market demand warrants the investment in the project, assuming the receipt of certain local and state incentives, as well as any benefits from the Inflation Reduction Act”, it is another sign that policy settings are flowing through to market decisions in favour of decarbonisation and low-carbon innovation.
