  • Power and infrastructure provider NextEra Energy will partner with Exxon Mobil Corp. to develop a 1.2 gigawatt natural gas plant with integrated CCS technology tailored to the massive power requirements of AI data centres. The project was announced at a recent NextEra Energy investor call and will be marketed to giant technology firms early in 2026. NextEra Energy is already developing campuses with Google and has secured 2.5 gigawatts of clean energy contracts from Meta.

The plant will span 2,500 acres in the Southeast U.S. within easy reach of Exxon’s CO2 pipeline infrastructure. NextEra Energy will lead construction and overall site development while ExxonMobil supplies natural gas along with its significant CCS capabilities, ensuring both a stable fuel supply and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

Carbon Herald reports that the project is a test case and will be replicated if hyperscalers embrace the model as “AI pushes power demand higher through the next decade.”

Writing for Energy News Beat, Charles Savage says the collaboration demonstrates how “E&P companies like ExxonMobil—focused on upstream activities such as oil and gas extraction—can complement electric power and infrastructure providers like NextEra to deliver turnkey solutions for AI data centers.”
