The fourteenth edition of the European Conference on Industrial Furnaces and Boilers (INFUB14) was held in Portugal, from April 2–5, 2024. INFUB14 featured six keynote speakers and included 132 contributed papers. Twenty-six technical papers were selected for potential publication in a special issue of Thermal Science and Engineering Progress. Following review in accordance with the journal’s standards, eighteen papers were accepted and have now been published.

INFUB is organised by Cenertec and has taken place every two years in Portugal since 1988. The aim of the conference is to disseminate information on research and development activities in the field of furnace and boiler technology and related areas, including combustion control, optimising the efficiency of high-temperature energy applications, and reducing pollutant emissions.

INFUB14 was held in the Algarve. Contributions to the special issue of Thermal Science and Engineering Progress cover a wide range of industrial sectors, including the steel and glass industries, coke production, and thermo-processing technologies in general. Examples of specific topics include thermochemical recycling of plastics, thermochemical valorisation of biomass into sustainable biomaterials and biofuels, radiation modeling, NOx formation in a nozzle-mixed flame burner with a pulsed cross-jet fuel injection configuration, and a numerical study on transient thermo-mechanical behavior during preheating of a full-scale metallurgical converter.
