Dutch carbon storage start-up C-Questra and American carbon removal company RepAir Carbon will build the first Direct Air Capture and Storage (DACS) facility in the EU. The facility is to be located in Grandpuits in north-central France where C-Questra has applied for a development permit.
Quoted in a press release, RepAir Carbon head of strategy and growth Jean-Philippe Hiegel said the project would “set a new standard for efficient, scalable carbon removal in Europe.” RepAir Carbon’s technology, he says, uses “…..just 0.6 MWh per ton of CO2 captured – compared to 2.5 MWh for most competitors.”
The development of Europe’s first commercial-scale CO2 storage hub is part of the Mediterranean Carbon Capture and Storage (CSS) Strategic Plan underwritten by France, Italy, and Greece. The project eliminates the need for expensive midstream and offshore infrastructure, streamlining the process and reducing costs.
The project’s goal is to remove 100,000 tons of CO2 per year by 2030, with the potential to scale up to megatons by 2035.
