ENGIE and Equinor are to work together to develop low-carbon hydrogen ‘activities’, after signing a memorandum of understanding. Those activities will include scoping possible customers to buy the hydrogen, and investigating “the development [of] low-carbon hydrogen value chains in Belgium, the Netherlands and France”, with the companies hoping that by working together, they can produce scale for the market, which will help to drive prices down. As S&P Platts Global reports, blue hydrogen is currently around €0.97/kg (US$1.18/kg) in the Netherlands, while green hydrogen is €2.87/kg (US$3.49/kg), pointing to the pragmatism in developing the blue hydrogen industry to retain customer market share until green hydrogen is more cost efficient.
