The government of Cambodia has approved two new coal-fired power plants with a total generation capacity of almost 1 GW, with the two projects and an associated transmission line to come in at a cost of US$1.7 billion (€1.57 billion). A 265 MW plant will be built in Trapaing Prasat district in Oddar Meanchey province (north-west Cambodia), while a 700 MW plant is to be located in Botum Sakor district of Koh Kong province (in the south-west). The plants are in keeping with the country’s 2020-30 energy plan, and are seen as important in supplying power when hydropower generation is lower during the dry season.
