Air Products has announced it will build what it claims will be Europe’s largest blue hydrogen plant, at its existing hydrogen production site in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Somewhat strangely, despite making the claim, the press release does not detail the capacity of the plant, although it does state that the facility is expected to be operational by 2026, and will connect to the Porthos carbon dioxide transport and storage service. The product hydrogen will supply ExxonMobil’s (Esso) Rotterdam refinery, as well as other customers “via Air Products’ hydrogen pipeline network system”.

All together, Air Products notes, the Porthos service will allow the company to reduce its emissions at the port of Rotterdam by more than half, though it is presumed the carbon capture rate at the hydrogen production site will be higher than that.
