The U.S. Department of Energy has announced funding of over US$2.3 billion (€2.2 billion) for three separate initiatives to promote carbon capture and storage.

The vast majority of the funding (US$2.25 billion) is through a notice of intent that “is intended to help address the feasibility, site characterization, permitting, and construction stages of CCS project development”, while also addressing local community issues.

The other two initiatives are US$45 million “to improve procedures to safely, efficiently, and affordably define and assess onshore and offshore CO₂ storage sites at a commercial scale”, and the third is US$46 million to “develop technologies to remove, capture, and convert or store carbon dioxide from utility and industrial sources or the atmosphere.

Projects will examine commercial viability and technical gaps, while also examining environmental impacts and justice implications of the technologies.”
