ExxonMobil looks set to increase its participation in the planned Acorn carbon capture and storage project in Scotland, after registering an expression of interest to study capture and storage from its Fife Ethylene Plant. The company already has a memorandum of understanding for a separate study into capture and storage from its St Fergus gas terminals, highlighting the wide geographical range of the Acorn project, with the ethylene plant being around 180 km from the gas terminals. (Storage is to occur in the North Sea.) Both Acorn and ExxonMobil’s involvement in it are still provisional, with government support being vital to the go-ahead of the scheme, which aims to capture 10 million tonnes/yr of CO₂ by 2030 and 20 million tonnes/yr by the mid-2030s. The Acorn scheme, run by independent company Storegga, is also to service the Grangemouth industrial site, owned by INEOS and Petroineos.
