Around 40 ministers from across the world representing countries that total around 80% of global energy consumption have attended a virtual meeting of the International Energy Agency to discuss transitioning to cleaner energy sources amidst the COVID-19 crisis. The summit, held on 9 July, covered how to support emerging technologies such as carbon capture, utilisation and storage, hydrogen, batteries, and bioenergy, as well as the need to maintain the resiliency of grids (which have generally coped well during the crisis) and diversify energy mixes to enhance security of supply. An interesting perspective was given by US Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette, who said that the US’s approach is ‘if sources are clean, they should be used to generate more electricity; if they are not so clean, they should be made cleaner; and where they may be intermittent, they should be made more reliable.’ There was broad support for the IEA’s Sustainable Recovery Plan from attendees of the summit.
