UK gas and electricity supplier Centrica – formed from British Gas in 1997 – has announced that it will cut a further 5000 jobs after rounds of redundancies over the past few years amounting to 12,500 jobs. According to the Financial Times, half of the job cuts will come from leadership, management, and corporate roles, with the COVID-19 crisis further adding to the company’s challenges, which have in recent years come from a rise in competition and an energy price cap. The general, municipal and boilermakers union GMB has criticised the move, saying that “slashing thousands more jobs is not the answer. You cannot just cut your way out of a crisis.”
