  • Estonian deep-tech company Stargate Hydrogen has signed an agreement with energy and engineering company Seacht Group to secure green hydrogen projects across the UK.

Stargate Hydrogen uses an innovative ceramic-based electrolysis technology to produce green hydrogen, has been in existence since 2021, and intends to establish a long-term commercial presence in the UK. As reported by Enlit, the company is actively pursuing ways to improve the efficiency and lower the cost of alkaline cells, stacks, and systems by building upon the proven aspects of alkaline electrolysis technology. Complementing the technology with breakthrough materials results in novel ceramics-based alkaline electrolysers with high current densities and high efficiencies, but which contain no precious metals. This lowers hydrogen production costs, making electrolysers more affordable for the end-users.

The Seacht Group offers a wide range of engineering services, including design, fabrication, pressure vessel manufacturing, and civils, and has expertise in industries such as natural gas, networks, security, and renewable energy.

Marko Virkebau, CEO of Stargate Hydrogen, said: “This partnership strengthens Stargate Hydrogen. The UK is a strategic market for us, and we need strong local partners with the experience needed to support project development.”

Hydrogen is seen in the UK as key to decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors such as steel, concrete, and heavy transport. Enlit reports that the UK government has set a target of 10GW low-carbon hydrogen production capacity by 2030, with at least half expected to be electrolytic green hydrogen. Policy and financing mechanisms introduced to support the target include the Hydrogen Investor Roadmap, the Hydrogen Production Business Model, and the £240 million ($321 million) Net Zero Hydrogen Fund.
