Siemens Energy and Aker Carbon Capture have signed a memorandum of understanding to work on combined solutions to offer gas-fired turbines and power plants. Aker’s specialisation is carbon capture technology, while Siemen’s is in power generation equipment and other various energy services, so the two in combination should make an attractive offering. Europe will be the target market to begin with, for both new and existing turbine builds, which worldwide supplied 23% of total power generation in 2019, giving an idea of the potential for the venture. Aker CEO Valborg Lundegaard said of the plan to work together that the “speed of the energy transition should be accelerated further, and industrial partnerships are needed to power the transformation”, while Karim Amin, Executive Vice President for Power Generation at Siemens Energy, said that the “drive towards net zero carbon emissions is gaining speed throughout the energy industry.”
