Shell has made an interesting step in the carbon offsetting field, with the purchase of Australian ‘carbon farming’ company Select Carbon to add to its ‘Nature Based Solutions’ portfolio. Select Carbon manages 70 projects covering 9 million hectares across Australia in which farmers use various techniques to trap more carbon in soils, and the practice is recognised by the Australian government as providing carbon credits. The purchase is the first globally for Shell’s Nature Based Solutions (which “invests in forests, grasslands, wetlands and other natural ecosystems around the world to reduce emissions and capture more CO2 while benefiting biodiversity and local communities”), and strengthens its already strong presence in Australia.
