LafargeHolcim Spain, Carbon Clean and Sistemas de Calor have created a joint venture to build carbon capture system at LafargeHolcim Spain’s cement manufacturing plant in the southern Spanish region of Almería. The venture, known as ECCO2, comes after two years of collaboration between the three companies already, having assessed the technical feasibility and benefits for the local community from the project. The facility is expected to go online in early 2023, and, interestingly, the captured CO2 is to be used in the greenhouses which are plentiful in the region, enhancing agricultural production. The circular economy aspect of the capture and utilisation of carbon dioxide may set an example for other locations around the world, should it be successful.
