  • The government of India is developing a strategy to adopt carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology. At the same time, an initiative is being launched to capture CO2 from major emission sources and fossil fuel-based power plants.

India currently depends on coal for more than 70% of its electricity generation. The decision to focus on CCUS technology as a means of lowering the country’s carbon footprint comes on the heels of a 2022 report by the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog).

According to a member of the NITI Aayog, the national mission for CCUS may offer methods such as viability gap funding, carbon pricing and taxing mechanisms, carbon trading, and production-linked subsidies to encourage its widespread use.

Alongside offering incentives to emitters, the initiative will prioritise technology advancement and the establishment of pilot facilities which encourage collaborations between businesses.

The policy framework is being developed by NITI Aayog, the Office of the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India, and the Ministry of Power.

India aims to become net-zero by 2070.
