An R&D programme focused on decarbonising the Dutch chemicals industry through hydrogen production and use has been awarded over €45m ($52.6m USD). The programme is to be carried out by HyCARB Consortium, a collaboration between nine universities, five universities of applied sciences (UAS), three research institutes, and 30 companies across Europe.
Led by the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO), the consortium conducts research into innovative, practice-oriented solutions for using hydrogen and green electrons in the production of carbon-based chemicals.
The funding programme, GroenvermogenNL, is part of the National Growth Fund and awarded €35.3m ($41.3m) in funding. Additional co-funding from project partners totalled €10.3m ($12m), bringing the full funding amount to almost €45.7m.
The HyCARB project is the result of the R&D call ‘Hydrogen and green electrons for carbon-based chemistry’ and focuses on the production of fuels and materials from industrial waste gases and CO2 through the use of green hydrogen and green electrons.
