In the first commercial offtake of biomethane in Indonesia, multinational manufacturing giant Unilever has started replacing natural gas with biomethane at its largest facility in the country.
Post expansion, Unilever’s oleochemicals factory in North Sumatra is now the largest greenhouse gas (GHG) emitting site in Unilever’s global operations. The shift towards thermal renewable energy is necessary to meet the company’s goal to reduce emissions by 100% by 2030.
The company has partnered with KIS Group, a leading biogas provider in Asia, to source and transport biomethane created from palm oil effluent from local mills. Biomethane is being sourced from two nearby mills that are compliant with Unilever’s People and Nature policy. According to a Unilever statement, the compressed biomethane (bioCNG) is being transported to UOI using trucks that themselves run on the bioCNG.
In time, the company expects to source over 800,000 MMBtu/annum of biomethane at UOI, and to meet almost a quarter of its energy needs by 2030.
