ABB has published a new white paper which details the challenges the global cement industry must tackle to decarbonise operations in line with global emissions reduction targets.
Cement plays a critical role in modern construction. However, the current manufacturing process is energy-intensive and reliant on fossil fuels, and it contributes approximately 7 percent of global carbon emissions. With global requirements for concrete predicted to generate 3.8 billion tons of CO2 by 2050, the cement industry must strike a balance between maintaining productivity and reducing emissions.
Combining insights from a range of key industry players, including customers, technology partners, and industry media and associations, the new paper explores cement’s sustainable future and lays out the benefits of advanced electrification used in tandem with technologies adopted through industry collaborations. The latter are described in detail and include a description of work with Captimise to develop screening, feasibility and Front-End Engineering and Design studies used to identify appropriate carbon capture technologies.
