In further news resulting from the fallout of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Bulgaria has taken its first shipment of LNG from Turkey. Long reliant on Russian natural gas, the Balkans nation was cut off from supply in April 2022, and afterwards connected its gas grid to that of Greece, which can receive gas from Azerbaijan via the Trans Adriatic Pipeline.

At the start of this year, Bulgargaz, the Bulgarian gas company, signed a supply deal with the Turkish Petroleum Pipeline Company for 1.5 billion cubic metres of gas per year, under the condition that none of the supplied gas would come from Russia, and the first shipment of 55 million cubic metres of gas is the first of that deal.

Bulgaria is also constructing a gas pipeline to connect itself with the Serbia grid to further diversify possible supplies.
