BP has announced what it says will be the UK’s largest ‘blue’ hydrogen project, to be built at Teesside, Yorkshire. The H2Teesside targets 1 GW of hydrogen production by 2030, capturing up to two million tonnes of CO2 per annum, and its proximity to North Sea gas fields will give it both a nearby supply of natural gas as a feedstock (with pipelines already in place) and handy storage sites for the captured carbon. The UK government is supportive of the project, having a target of 5 GW of hydrogen of production by 2030 and also wishing to regenerate industry in the north of England.
