  • Ukrinform reports that  Ukraine and Austria have signed a memorandum of cooperation in the renewable hydrogen sector. The document provides for the development of hydrogen production, the creation of infrastructure for storage and transportation, and the attraction of investment into the sector.

The parties also discussed other bilateral agreements, including the production of energy equipment to support the restoration of Ukraine’s energy system.

Ukraine’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal notes that Ukrainian and Austrian businesses have already established close cooperation across various energy sectors. The new agreement expands this cooperation and prioritises Ukrainian underground gas storage and joint gas production facilities.

As reported by Connor Jack in H2 View, Ukraine’s energy system maintains a large hydrogen production potential despite having taken a major hit from Russia’s invasion. Quoting from an IEA analysis, he says that producing 2.5 million tonnes of hydrogen a year could bring the country $18–22bn annually from steel and pipeline exports.

In January 2025, Ukraine’s Gas TSO and several key organizations signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the creation and implementation of the “Ukraine–EU Hydrogen Corridor.”
