Spanish energy infrastructure company Enagás and industrial lime producer Calcinor have signed a collaboration deal which will slash CO2 emissions at Calcinor by up to 900,000 metric tons a year.
The strategic partnership will see the two companies designing a comprehensive value chain from capture at Calcinor industrial sites to transport, liquefaction, and either storage or reuse. Enagás will manage the downstream logistics, utilising its regasification terminals as hubs for CO2 export or storage.
At the agreement signing, Enagás General Director and Business Development and Affiliates General Manager Jesús Saldaña said the agreement with Calcinor, who are leaders in the industrial use of minerals, is a major leap forward in decarbonising this hard-to-abate sector. He added that by leveraging their respective synergies, “these two companies will become leaders in innovation and competitiveness in sustainable CO2 management in this sector”.
According to a joint press release issued by the partners, they will carry out technical, organisational, financial, contractual and legal feasibility studies on the CO2 value chain, as well as designing the corresponding infrastructure. They will also explore opportunities to jointly apply for European funding, such as Innovation Funds and Projects of Common Interest (PCI).
A non-binding Call For Interest process, announced by Enagás on the Second Hydrogen Day in January 2024, identified a total of 37 companies interested in CO2 capture — to reduce a total of 10.4 million tonnes per year (Mt/a)— and 53 companies interested in infrastructure for its transport and storage.
