  • The HERACLES Group, leader in sustainable building materials and member of Holcim, has signed a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) contract with Air Liquide Engineering and Construction for the Olympus  carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in Greece.

Olympus secured a grant from the EU Innovation Fund in 2023. The project is to be located at the HERACLES Milaki plant and aims to capture, liquefy, store, and transport 1 million tons of carbon dioxide annually.

Working together, HERACLES and Air Liquide will upgrade and equip the Milaki plant, using oxygen enrichment and cryogenic separation to integrate systems into existing plant infrastructure. The captured CO2 will be liquefied and transported by sea to the Prinos offshore sequestration facility in the northern Aegean Sea.

The FEED study will define the project’s technical requirements, layout, and investment cost, paving the way for equipment procurement and construction.

The agreement between HERACLES and Air Liquide represents a crucial milestone towards the FID (final investment decision) of the project.

Olympus is expected to commence full-scale operations by 2029.
