Germany’s MAN Energy Solutions and Norway’s Aker Carbon Capture have agreed a memorandum of understanding to jointly pursue carbon capture, utilisation and storage (as well as CO₂ compression) projects in North America. The two companies are a good fit with Aker bringing carbon capture and storage expertise, and MAN offering its system integration and compressor technology know-how.

Both companies are aiming to offer standardised, modular solutions to bring the costs of CCUS down. With attractive tax credits and other policy support available in much of North America, it is a natural market for the companies to seek to expand into, as they are currently working on developing Heidelberg Materials’ Brevik CCS facility in Norway, which is claimed as being the world’s first CCS plant for the cement industry.

In November last year, the two companies furthered their collaboration by beginning work together on a feasibility study for a joint power to fuel solution, which incorporates carbon capture.
