HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is set to build a subsea underground carbon dioxide storage platform for the Donghae Gas Field Utilization CCS Project, after signing a preliminary basic design agreement with Hyundai Engineering & Construction.

Donghae CCS, located around 60 kilometres offshore of the city of Ulsan, in the East Sea, is Korea’s largest carbon capture project, and an initiative of Korea National Oil Corporation and Hyundai E&C. Upon startup, it aims to capture and store 1.2 million tonnes of CO2 per year, a target which may increase as the project progresses. HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering is to develop the CO2 injection system for the site, and it and HHI have previously collaborated on another such project.
