Siemens Energy has won a contract to provide hydroelectric power, as well as motors, variable speed drives, and the main refrigerant compressors for the Woodfibre LNG project, to be built near Squamish in British Colombia, Canada, at the site of a former pulp and paper factory. By providing renewable electricity, Siemens estimates that operational greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced at the plant by 80% compared to a ‘normal’ operational scenario.

Woodfibre is designed to process 2.1 million tonnes of LNG per year, and is due to begin operations in September 2027. Siemens Energy’s Executive Vice President of Industrial Applications, Thorbjörn Fors, said of the project that “it will help support the journey toward global decarbonization with exports to Asian economies currently driven by coal.”
