Israel has set a target of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 85% from 2015 levels by 2050, and 27% by 2030, as Reuters reports. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said of the new targets that they would lead to a “clean, efficient and competitive economy”, while Environmental Protection Minister Tamar Zandberg said that “We set significant goals, we met our international commitment on time, and most importantly, we mobilised the entire government,” somewhat confusingly using the past tense. To meet the overall 2050 target, the country wishes to reduce carbon emissions from transport by 96%, from municipal waste by 92%, and by 85% from the electricity sector. The 2050 target is not quite the net-zero goal set by many other nations, but may of course be revised in the future.
