Qatar Petroleum has made a final investment decision to go ahead with the US$28.75 billion (€23.65 billion) North Field East project, which is to produce 33 million tonnes per annum of LNG. The project will make North East Field the largest in the world in terms of output, and will bring the country’s total output of LNG to 110 million metric tonnes per annum when it comes online in 2025. Apart from LNG, the facility will also be capable of producing condensate, LPG, ethane, sulphur, and helium, a diversity which will help mitigate financial impacts of changes in demand for any single product. Qatar Petroleum subsidiary Qatargas will execute the project, while Chiyoda and Technip will form a joint venture to construct it.

Alongside the gas field will be a carbon capture and storage facility which will capture an as-yet unspecified portion of carbon dioxide, though it is reported that the overall greenhouse gas footprint of produced LNG will be 25% lower than similar LNG facilities. Other features of the facility includes dry low-NO_x technology and a ‘jetty boil-off gas’ recovery system, designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
