Freshly released data has shown that the reduction in transport and industrial activity caused by the COVID-19 crisis has meant that US energy-related CO2 emissions were at their lowest ever monthly recorded level in April of this year. (Records began in 1973.) Total CO2 emissions were at 307 million (metric) tonnes for the month, after emissions from petroleum consumption fell by 25% and 16% from coal (on a month-on-month basis). The context was a 39.8% drop in travel on US roads and a 96% decline in the number of airplane passengers. The Energy Information Administration predicts that for the rest of 2020, emissions will be about 11% lower than the equivalent period last year.
