Ireland is to continue its use of natural gas while aiming to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, according to a report from the Irish Independent newspaper. The state-owned Ervia utility has signed a memorandum of understanding with Norway’s Equinor to transport CO₂ to Norway for storage, but it is also considering setting up its own storage site off the southern coast of Ireland. It seems that carbon capture would be installed at gas-fired power plants, as a spokesperson for Ervia explained that the technology is in place already at 18 sites around the world, and that the issue preventing wider deployment was cost. At the same time, the write up in the Independent article seems to suggest that supply of gas to dwellings might become hydrogen or biogas as a means of achieving net-zero emissions.
