In China, a program of installing NOx, SOx and particulates emissions reduction technologies has now upgraded an astonishing 700 GW of coal-fired power generation, according to the national government. In doing so, China is two years ahead of schedule, and also 120 GW over the original target of upgrading 580 GW of capacity, making an impressive feat. The upgraded plants now have emissions of NOx, SOx and particulates comparable to those from gas-fired plants in the country, though no specific emissions levels are stated in the article in China Knowledge, and relative measures can be misleading. Coal now comprises 60% of China’s power generation capacity, down from 69.5% in 2012.
