Photochemical smog is a brownish haze formed due to photochemical reactions, which involve the oxidation of volatile organic compounds (COVs) in the presence of nitrogen oxides and sunlight. It is composed mainly by ozone but also by peroxy acetyl nitrate (PAN), nitric acid, aldehydes, organic acids, particulates and short-lived radical species.
