By fermentation of biomass, the biomass is broken down by anaerobic bacteria (bacteria who live in absence of oxygen) to form a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide. Fermentation is especially useful for wet streams and is widely used for industrial waste water and sludge from sewer-purifications installations.
