A molten material that floats on the surface of the liquid iron/steel within the basic oxygen furnace during the refining process, comprising fluxes – burnt lime, burnt dolomite, and fluorspar used to reduce the sulphur and phosphorous levels – all of which are carried off within the slag along with a small amount of oxidized iron.
