Gas- und Wärme-Institut Essen e.V. (GWI) is a non-profit research organization originally founded in 1937 by the German gas industry, to promote and scientifically investigate the use of gaseous fuels in the residential, industrial and power generation sectors.
Its industrial research activities today concentrate on the use natural gas, but also non-conventional fuel gases such as syngases, BFG and such in large-scale combustion processes in thermal processing industries and power generation, with a focus on process efficiency and emissions control. Also, the integration of gases from renewable sources such as biogas or hydrogen into industrial firing processes plays an important part in GWI’s portfolio of activities.
GWI operates several semi-industrial burner test rigs with extensive air preheating or oxy-fuel capabilities, and also uses CFD simulation to investigate and analyze industrial combustion processes.
