The Spanish laboratory Fundación Ciudad de la Energía (CIUDEN) has reached a significant milestone at its CO2 Capture Centre near León, Spain, by successfully operating its new 20 MW multi-burner test boiler on natural gas.  The boiler, which is fired by four 5 MW burners arranged in two pairs, is part of a semi-industrial scale test facility for the R&D of CO2 capture technology using oxy-combustion.

The facility is unique because it allows research with all types of coals and incorporates two distinct oxy-combustion technologies, Pulverised Coal (PC) and Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB), the latter being first of its class in the world.  The technical characteristics of the plant provide great operational flexibility and versatility, and make it point of reference worldwide for the development and validation of these technologies.

More information about the the current milestone can be found on the CaptureReady web site. General information on the CIUDEN facility can be found on the Ciuden Website.
