During the last IFRF Joint Committee meeting Wiebren de Jong was nominated as Deputy Superintendent of Research.

Wiebren graduated with MSc in chemical engineering from Twente University in 1991. After the next three years he graduated with PdEng from the same university. The work, done in close cooperation with Groningen State University focused on alternative synthesis routes for the production of aramid. After that he took a post-graduate exchange programme at the University of Stuttgart expanding his technical interests upon the field of air-conditioning systems based on hydrogen storage in metal hydrides.

In 1996 he started his PhD studies in the Energy Technology section of the faculty 3mE, Department of Process and Energy at TU Delft, in the field of biomass gasification in pressurized fluidized bed reactors. His specialization was in the speciation of nitrogen oxides precursors. Since graduating with a PhD degree in 2005 he became an assistant professor and in 2010 associate professor in the field of thermo-chemical conversion of biomass. His interests included combustion of biomass-derived gases, and hybrid biorefinery concepts.

He participated in and partly coordinated several European projects, including larger Integrated Projects (FP7). Currently he is a work package leader of advanced measurement techniques for thermo-chemical biomass conversion systems in the Infrastructures project BRISK.

He is a member of the STW platform clean and efficient combustion as well as a TU Delft representative in the Dutch Flame Research Foundation. He is a lecturer of renewable energy related courses like Energy from Biomass (SET MSc. Programme) and Thermodynamics and Thermal Power Plants. He is a member of the Delft Energy Initiative coordinating team, in the bioenergy field.
I would like to thank Wiebren for accepting this position and wish him many successes in this role.

As we are approaching holiday time IFRF will have an August break with issuing MNMs. The next issue of MNM will be on 1st September. To all of you who plan a rest in August – Have a nice holiday period.
