Last year cracking of the Isothermal Plug Flow Reactor, internal reactor tubes, due to aging, (see Photograph), gave us the opportunity to refurbish the facility completely.

The Isothermal Plug Flow Reactor can be operated in the temperature range of 700 up to 1450°C with a residence time in the range of 5ms up to 1.5s. Basically, all solid fuels can be characterised on this reactor for volatile release, fate of fuel nitrogen and char burnout.

In the last years a wide variety of coals ranking from anthracite to brown coal have been tested and also a wide range of alternative fuels such as sewage sludges, biomass and different kinds of waste materials and plastics have been characterised for their combustion characteristics.
