  • The Combura symposium, organised by the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Vlamonderzoek NVV (Netherlands Association for Flame Research), the former IFRF Dutch Flame Committee, was held over a couple of days at the end of October in Eindhoven. It is the major event for exchange of information on combustion research and its practical applications, in the Netherlands, which takes place annually.

Described as a ‘great success’, 70 participants from universities, research institutes, and industrial companies attended to hear about the latest developments and innovations in advanced combustion research with the emphasis on potential for application in industry.

The 2-day conference included 3 invited key-note lectures entitled:

    • Active and Inactive Metal Oxides for Low-Temperature Combustion and Selective Oxidation, by Ewa J Marek from the University of Cambridge
    • Electromagnetic interactions and engineered fuels to deliver flames on demand: towards a new paradigm for sustainable energy and propulsion systems, by Andrea Giusti from Imperial College
    • Industrial combustion problems related to the energy transition,  Marcel Cremers, DNV.

There were also parallel presentations and a very interactive and successful poster session covering a broad range of industry-relevant topics such as biofuels use and production, hydrogen combustion, soot formation, gas turbines, heaters and boilers -to name a few.

The event wrapped up with the Best Poster Awards and the NVV Best Master Thesis Award 2025. This award recognises the most outstanding master thesis in the field of combustion technology, completed by a young expert in the Netherlands during the previous year.

Abstracts of the papers are available to download from the Combura conference website.
