The German Flame Research Committee, in co-operation with the VDI and the German Section of the Combustion Institute, held their 21st German Flame Days at the audimax of the Brandenburg Technical University Cottbus last week on 8th and 9th September 2003.

There were some 220 registrations for a very full and interesting technical programme, but with late registrations the number of attendees were significantly higher.  The possibility of networking was strongly enhanced by the superb weather, at least on the first day.

The organisers are to be congratulated on the fact that these were the 21st German Flame days.

In the morning session two of the participants, both strong IFRF Co-operators were honoured.

The first was Prof. Thomas Just – former IFRF Flame Chemistry Panel Chairman (1984-1989) who was awarded the Prof. Rudolf Gunter medal for lifetime achievement.

The medal was presented by Prof. Wagner, the Chairman of the German Section of the Combustion Institute, who then presented the Prof Jost Medal to Dr Christian Mueller from Prof. Mikko Hupa’s Combustion Chemistry Research Group at Åbo Akademi, Finland.  His paper presented at the previous, 20th German Flame days, had been chosen as the best paper.

Christian, with his colleagues at Torku, is presently co-operating with the IFRF in the preparation of Combustion Files on the subject of Black Liquor for the IFRF Online Combustion Handbook.

This range of experience was well reflected in participants at the Flame Days. Congratulations!
