US Company WireTough Cylinders has obtained the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII-Div 3 U3 Certification stamp for its Type II-S cylinder design for bulk storage of gaseous hydrogen at a pressure of 350 bar.

The certification is a boon for the company as it seeks to win business in the burgeoning hydrogen sector, with each cylinder able to store 40.7 kg of the elemental gas. It sees particular applications in storage of H2 produced from excess renewable energy in peak times, as well as bulk storage of the gas for transport refuelling, especially in trucks. WireTough claims that its vessels are “50% lighter, expected to be significantly more cost-effective, and require considerably less space on the basis of per kg of hydrogen stored”.

The company is looking for partners to commercialise the technology.
