An unusual new design for an oscillating tower that generates power from vibrations caused by wind has been unveiled by a Spanish start-up, Vortex Bladeless. The tower consists of a stationary base supporting a movable mast, within which is a rectifier, alternator and tuning system; with no blades like a normal wind turbine, the makers claim it is harmless to wildlife and quieter, while being able to be deployed at a domestic scale. Little information is currently available on its potential power output, but the design has attracted the attention of Equinor, which has listed the company as one of its ten most exciting energy start-ups. Many thousands of comments have been posted on forum site Reddit about the combination of the technology’s shape and its vibrational behaviour.
