German manufacturing company Thyssenkrupp Nucera is to supply electrolysers to Sweden’s H2 Green Steel for what is to become the first large-scale green steel plant in Europe.

Alkaline water electrolysis ‘Scalum’ electrolysers, which come in 20 MW modules, will be employed at the plant, with a total capacity of more than 700 MW, producing 2.5 million tonnes of steel per annum initially, doubling to 5 million tonnes by 2030. Through the use of green hydrogen (the electricity will be renewable) in the direct reduction of iron, carbon dioxide emissions for steel production at the plant will be reduced by up to 95%, and demand for the product steel from the automotive industry is already said to be high.

The electric arc furnace plant is to be built at Boden in northern Sweden.
