Saudi Arabian utility company (and the world’s largest private water desalination company) ACWA Power is to develop Indonesia’s largest green hydrogen project, after signing an agreement with Indonesian state-owned power company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara and state-owned fertiliser and chemical producer PT Pupuk Indonesia.

The Garuda Hidrogen Hijau Project will be powered by 600 MW of solar and wind power generation capacity, aiming to produce 150,000 tonnes (presumably metric) of hydrogen per year, with an estimated project cost of US$1 billion. It is the third in a series of large green hydrogen projects ACWA is involved with, the others being the giant 1.2 million tonne/year NEOM Green Hydrogen Project in Saudi Arabia, and a project in Uzbekistan. The Garuda Hidrogen project is expected to conduct engineering procurement and construction in 2024-2025, such that operations can begin sometime in 2026.

It was announced from the sidelines of the COP28 conference in Dubai, with Marco Arcelli, Chief Executive Officer of ACWA Power, saying that “As we expand our footprint in Indonesia, we remain committed to supporting sustainable progress, for a greener future for all.”
