BP is to “hand over” the production and publication of the annual The Statistical Review of World Energy to the UK’s Energy Institute.

BP has been producing the Review since 1952, and it is a resource widely respected and used across the energy industry. The company’s press release does not directly explain why it will no longer produce the Review itself, but there are some possible hints within the language used regarding the new custodians. Energy Institute president Juliet Davenport said that the EI is “pleased to welcome the Statistical Review to its new home at the Energy Institute, where it has a long-term, independent, free-to-access future providing the vital data and insights needed by the industry, its workforce and wider society as we accelerate the energy transition.”

Data compilation will still be carried out by the Centre for Energy Economics Research and Policy at Heriot-Watt University, and BP itself will “provide continuing support”. In addition, management consulting companies KPMG and Kearney will have input into the production of the Review.
