The International Energy Agency and the Cement Sustainability Initiative – a collection of 24 cement companies worldwide – have released a report into how the cement industry could reduce emissions by 2050. With cement production expected to increase by 12-23% by 2050, and the cement industry already being the world’s second largest industrial emitter of carbon dioxide, the need for reductions is clear. Through a combination of energy efficiency, fuel switching, reduced clinker content, alternative binding materials, carbon capture and storage, and longer building lives, it is estimated that by 2050 a 24% reduction in emissions from the present day can be achieved. The report argues that governments will need to provide strong policy support for such technical measures to bear fruit.
