Carbon Herald reports that India has established its first cluster of carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) testbeds within the cement sector.
The effort supports India’s pledge to reach net-zero emissions by 2070 and contributes to its Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement. The sites are distributed across Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Goa with a pilot installation located in Ballabgarh, Haryana.
The goal is to enable the production of low-carbon or “green” cement at scale through ongoing research in advanced materials, catalysts, and process innovation. As such, the test beds have been designed to capture carbon dioxide from cement production and convert it into useful products such as synthetic fuels, urea, soda ash, food-grade CO2, and construction materials like aggregates.
The programme will operate under a Public-Private Partnership model and brings together leading cement manufacturers and research institutions to accelerate the development of cost-effective CCU technologies.
In February of this year, the Indian power minister announced that India would launch a carbon market in 2026. Read more.
