A new report from a consortium of research and industry institutions and major manufacturers participating in the trans-European H2Glass project explores how maintenance strategies can support the safe introduction of hydrogen into glass manufacturing processes.
Entitled “Hydrogen in Glass Sector: A Comparison between Risk-Based Maintenance and Time-Based Maintenance Approaches”, the report describes a study in which time-based and risk-based maintenance strategies were compared in terms of their ability to support the safe introduction of hydrogen into glass manufacturing processes.
The study represents the first application of risk-based maintenance to a hydrogen facility in the glass sector. Participating partners included the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, SINTEF Energy Research, Politecnico di Milano and the University of Florence.
The results demonstrate that risk-based management is better able to prioritise critical equipment by considering both the likelihood and consequences of failure, thereby helping to maintain safety while supporting industrial decarbonisation.
Providing valuable insights for the broader adoption of hydrogen across energy-intensive industries, the report contributes to the H2Glass project mission to enable the safe and sustainable transition towards hydrogen-powered industrial processes and support the decarbonisation of the glass sector.
H2Glass is an EU co-funded project.
