German energy company Mabanaft (a subsidiary of independent holding company Marquard & Bahls) has signed a letter of intent with the US’s Pattern Energy for the potential supply of green ammonia from Canada.

The envisioned start of supply is 2027, at around 400 tonnes per day, with the ammonia being produced at the Port of Argentia in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, using wind power and hydroelectricity. As part of the letter of intent, which was signed in the presence of German Economic Affairs and Climate Action Minister Robert Habeck as well as Canadian Energy and Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson, Mabanaft may co-invest in the plant and infrastructure required to produce the ammonia.

The announcement follows news in early February that a scoping meeting had been held for the creation of an ammonia import terminal in Hamburg.
